Police The Climate

The "Live Earth" series of shows, organized all around the world on 07/07/07 (the neighbor of the beast day?) was a fulminating success, according to the organizers, despite the high prices for tickets, especially in the UK on Wembley Stadium, where deluxe tickets reached even the steep amount of 348 US dollars. Some of the more famous performing stars were Madonna, Sting & The Police, Kanye West, Genesis, Black Eyes Peas, Duran Duran, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers and many others. Despite ticket prices, people attended the show and showed support for a worthy cause, in their opinion. The London concert was not without problems though, including technical difficulties, dirty language, messy spectators leaving plastic cups all over the place and confused presenters.

Besides those minor issues, the show raised an interesting controversy: for a show raising awareness about ecological problems, an awful amount of electrical power was consumed, not to mention the pollution created by the cars and planes used to carry around the performers and the crowd. An expert opinion calculated the pollution (carbon footprint) caused by the London show as being 3000 times higher than the average British consumer creates in a whole year. In other terms, one day of the show polluted as one day in the life of 765,000 people.

Noticing these numbers and problems, one might add that the organizers of the show didn't really care about global warming and pollution harming the planet, since for a day, they were the main polluters. Less hypocritical of them would have been to say that the show was about raising awareness in the issue of humankind's own self destruction, and how to prevent that, if at all possible. But the tickets sell better if the cause appears worthy and righteous (self-righteous I might add)

Although the main organizer, Al Gore, specifically mentions that he doesn't have a political agenda, this remains yet to be seen, as he has been increasingly active lately, with his books, movie and now, this huge musical event. A more cynical observer might even say that we're not in this together, as the tag-lines are suggesting, but that he is in this solely for fame and money. Of course, I would not dare to question his motives, except after I actually see him running in the 2008 elections, although he doesn't have enough political support yet, but if the public likes him, the democrats might like him too.

In the end, I'll turn a little dramatic too and urge the people to contribute to the cleaning of their own yard and reducing overall energy consumption, because if you want your families and your children to live a healthy and happy life in the near future, you have to start working for it now. So stop using so much electricity, try to switch to ecological machinery and healthy food, and stop driving so much – only then will there be hope for human kind.
