The Beckhams Discover America
16 July, 2007
So everyone talks about David and Victoria Beckham coming to America. When they finally arrived, late Thursday, they crossed streams of enthusiastic reporters and photographers, plus a number of fans, admirers or just curious by-standers. The couple arrived alone, without the three children that – Victoria says – she wants protected from the ever vigilant eye of the media. So they landed, rapidly passing from the plane – through the crowd – onto their SUV with black windows, CIA style. After this delightful and warm welcoming committee, they left towards their $22 million house, where they were probably expected by their more-famous neighbors, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Rumor has it that Tom Cruise is planning a house warming party some time in the near future. No rest for the wicked they say, and we say no rest for the famous either. Although their departure was not marked by pompous farewell parties, but just a couple of drinks with some close friends, and their trip was event-less until the arrival on LAX, Thursday probably ended in quiet repose for Britain's favorite gossip target practice, as rest was necessary for the big Friday ahead, when Victoria was scheduled for a radio show and David for a massive press conference. Victoria's show was rather cute and, on a lighter note, even some flirting occurred, on the lines of "He [David] is very handsome. You're handsome, too! You're both really handsome. David's got a great sense of humor, he's very funny, he's a fantastic husband and he's great with the children." Pretty deep, huh? After some jokes I did not get, because either I'm a moron or Victoria's humor is too British for me, the radio show ended with a question about her teeth and an answer which was about as amusing as the rest of her lines: "My teeth are fine! They don't look like a row of bombed-up houses or anything". And the punch line is? Silence...
The press conference was impressive though, with over 600 journalists being accredited and David also receiving a gift from the Mayor of the city. A note on David's recently launched blog says that "I am now moving on to an exciting new challenge at the LA Galaxy. So far, everyone has been amazing, and my family and myself have been made to feel extremely welcome. I now have a great opportunity to raise the profile of football in America, (or soccer I should say!) and that’s something I’m genuinely excited about". This also coincides with his statement at the press conference which was "I have always looked for challenges in my life. My family has moved to Los Angeles and this is something we are proud of. Right now, everything is perfect. My family is the most important thing for me, but the soccer is second." Let's just hope that David can pull the team out of relative anonymity, at the same time avoiding him being pulled down by this sudden change in his life. We're positively anxious about the party installed for them by Tom Cruise, and I can hardly wait for some hot pictures from their new ultra-expensive mansion.
