Keira Knightley Fabulous in “Atonement”?

"Atonement" is apparently the rage of the Venice festival this year and there have already been voices predicting it will not only claim the Golden Lion but also move on to reap a handful of Oscars in the near future. It features two very loved British actors - Keira Knightley and James MacAvoy and as far as critics' opinions go, their performances have been ranked as 'flawless". This is no surprise in what concerns MacAvoy, whose performance we've had a chance to admire on many occasions, but since we all know Keira Knightley (despite her Oscar nomination for "Pride and Prejudice") is no Katherine Hepburn, this movie should go on your must-see list. Admittedly, it was granted the honor of opening the Venice festival two days ago and there's always a pretty good reason for that.

"Atonement" is a classic British period drama based on the much-acclaimed novel written by Ian McEwan and shortlisted for the Booker prize in 2001. And if you were really longing to see Keira Knightley in a period swimming suit and matching underwear taking a dive in a fountain, this is the best place to be. The story is pretty much a classic, a romance stretching over decades and into World War II.
Enlarge pictureIt kicks off on a hot summer day in 1935, when Cecillia Tallis (Knightley) suddenly becomes aware of her intense feelings for Robbie Turner (MacAvoy), the son of the cleaning lady whom her father has taken as a protegee and sent to the same college as Cecillia. But Cecillia's 13-year old sister Briony, who becomes an unwilling witness to their budding love affair, makes one life-altering mistake and at the end of a tragic night accuses Robbie of a terrible crime that he did not commit.



The story then jumps a few years and we pick up the characters and their ensuing lives during World War II. It is a beautiful movie, filled with wonderful scenic images that evoke both the beauty of the English countryside and the intense drama that build up slowly and comes to a tragic end. World War II is evoked in a passionate, ever-changing display of landscapes and situations that mirror the main characters' fight for survival. Briony, who is now convinced she has made a mistake in pointing the finger of blame to Robbie and thus destroying his life, tries to atone for her mistake but 60 years later she realizes she's been fighting a losing battle.

Overall, it is a strong movie and it remains to be seen whether you'll find the performances of the cast convincing. You can watch the trailer and share your thoughts with us – particularly in what concerns Keir Knightley's performance. Has she finally managed to strike a more convincing cord in her acting career? It remains to be seen.
