Michael Jackson Is Just as Delightfully Deluded as Ever – Only Scarier

Oh, Michael. Almost fifty and still deluded. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be laughing my head off at these photos or if I should be wondering how come a man who once sang that 'it doesn't matter if you're black or white" is on the cover of US magazine Ebony (aimed mainly at black Americans) looking whiter than ever. It may be that this is some subtle artistic message that's too sophisticated for me to understand, but as far as I can see, this startlingly pale new look (not to mention the heavily airbrushed photograph) only allow the world to realize that Jacko is still self-obsessed and still plain weird.

He, however, doesn't seem to mind in the slightest. "I don't pay attention to that" he states referring to all the rumors that are currently swirling around. "In my opinion, it's ignorance. It's usually not based on fact. ... Every neighborhood has the guy who you don't see, so you gossip about him. You see those stories about him, there's the myth that he did this or he did that. People are crazy!" OK, now I'm officially offended. So in reality, it's not Jacko that (despite his iconic status in the music world) has the identity problems, is broke and has a troubled personal life – we're the ones with the problem. Yes, that makes perfect sense.

Enlarge pictureJackson says he hasn't changed all that much since the release of his highly successful album "Thriller" nearly 25 years ago. "That Michael is probably the same Michael here," he says. "I just wanted to get certain things accomplished first. But I always had this tug in the back of my head, the things I wanted to do, to raise children, have children. I'm enjoying it very much. When you're on top of your game, when you're a pioneer, people come at you. ... But I feel grateful, all those record-breaking things, to the biggest albums, to those No. 1s, I still feel grateful".

Well, that's good news – I think. But really, I think you'll agree with me when I say that these beautiful words seem very much out of place given the singer's background and the events that have marked him as a public person over the past decades. Not even being Michael Jackson can save you from the damage you inflict upon yourself and none of his statements reveal that he might be at any point aware of his status as a role model not only within, but mainly outside the music world.

"I always want to do music that influences and inspires each generation" he adds. "Let's face it, who wants mortality? You want what you create to live, and I give my all in my work because I want it to live". Well, I’m sure he has a point and that his music and the trends he set will live – but at what price?
