"You know what, I’m a classy woman, I’m never ever going to battle anything out in the press," says LeAnn Rimes, following allegations of "stalking" being lodged at her by the wife of her Lifetime movie costar Eddie Cibrian.

The country star tells PEOPLE she's protective of those close to her.

"I have respect for everyone that is involved and everyone's family, including my own," she said at the Dior Beauty Lunch at the Shangri-la Hotel in Santa Monica on Wednesday afternoon.

Continues the singer: "I would never want to hurt my husband or anyone else with more lies dragged out in the press."

Earlier on Wednesday, a rep for Rimes stepped in, calling the "stalking" accusation by Cibrian's wife Brandi Glanville “incredibly defamatory.”

"It is what it is," says Rimes. "I can’t control other people but I can control what I say and what I don’t. I refuse to get down on any one else’s level and I’m going to take the high road on everything."

Fans of Dancing with the Stars pro Julianne Hough haven’t been happy ever since the 20-year-old two-time champ said she would not be back next season.

Hough, who danced with her boyfriend, country singer Chuck Wicks, this season, now says she in no way meant to imply that she was leaving the show for good.

In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, Hough said: “I am appreciative to be taking this coming season of Dancing with the Stars off to focus on my other career paths like touring in support of my album and recording my next one. I look forward to returning to DWTS in early 2010.”

And she has the go-ahead from Dancing executive producer Conrad Green, who tells PEOPLE that he gave Hough his blessing to “take a breather. It’s a really intensive show so we welcome our dancers the opportunity to take a break.”

With Hough’s growing popularity, Green adds, “It doesn’t damage the show to have her pursue her music. What’s lovely is she’s committed to the show and she wanted to get that message out there that she’ll be back.”
Hough is not the first dancer to take time off to pursue outside ventures. After landing in the finals with partner Mel B. in season 5, pro hoofer Maksim Chmerkovskiy took the following season off to focus on choreographing the Las Vegas show La Rêve before returning in season 7 to team up with Olympic volleyball champion Misty May-Treanor.
"Everyone around the table went nuts like she was giving a performance or something," an onlooker says. "She obviously loved the fact that they played her songs."

Is Lindsay Lohan the next star to headline a Las Vegas act?

Possibly. The actress has approached the producer of Peepshow, a new Las Vegas revue, about joining the act in several months, PEOPLE has learned.

"I think she would be great in the show," Peepshow's producer Jerry Mitchell told PEOPLE. "I would need to meet with her and dance a bit as I would with anyone who would love to be a part of Peepshow."

Lohan was in Las Vegas Saturday taking in the performance that stars former Dancing with the Stars contestants Melanie Brown and Kelly Monaco. If Lohan were to join the show, she would take over for Monaco in several months in a role that requires Monaco to strip down to almost nothing – something that won't change if Lohan starred.

"When the character strips she does it because she has learned to be strong by the other character/dancers in the show, and by watching them take charge with their considerable assets," Mitchell said. "I am sure I could do the same for Miss Lohan."

He added, "The show is a perfect match for Lindsay and her beauty as well as her acting talents."

A three-judge Supreme Court of Appeal panel will convene on May 4 to hear an appeal filed by Madonna against an April 3 Malawi High Court decision to stop her from adopting 3-year-old Malawian girl Chifundo "Mercy" James.

Joseph Chigona, registrar of the High Court and the Supreme Court of Appeal, said Monday, "As with all court cases involving infants, this one will be in chambers, not in an open court."

Alan Chinula, Madonna's Malawian lawyer, said he already has presented grounds for his appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeal and was hopeful. "We believe the lower court judge erred by basing her judgment on an archaic law of over 50 years ago," he said.

According to Chigona and Chinula, the singer is not required to be present during the appeal, which may last for two weeks.

Madonna, 50, adopted her son, David Banda, now 3, from Malawi in 2008; she was granted custody and allowed to take him out of the country two years earlier. That adoption caused controversy, including claims that her application received special status because of her celebrity.

Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen exchanged vows in a short sunset ceremony at her home in Costa Rica early Saturday evening, PEOPLE has learned.

The bride, in a long designer dress and a veil that trailed 10 feet, and holding a bouquet of white orchids, “looked so gorgeous,” a source tells PEOPLE. “She looked beautiful.”

Security guards blocked off key access points to Bündchen's house in Santa Teresa, where 25 or so guests gathered under a tent set up on the home’s balcony.

After the ceremony, Brady, 31, in a gray suit and vest with white pants, held his 1 ½-year-old son John on the balcony and spoke with guests like Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots. Bündchen, 28, also hugged guests while friends and relatives snapped photos.

They all seemed “very happy, like they were having a great time,” says one onlooker.

That afternoon, Bündchen got dressed at the nearby Hotel Flor Blanca while workers readied her home.

Though it's not exactly recession-friendly, Aaron Spelling's mansion will be perfect for the right person – someone looking for the bragging rights of owning the most expensive home for sale in the United States.

How much? His widow, Candy, is putting the expansive home, called "The Spelling Manor," on the market for a whopping $150 million.

The largest home in Los Angeles County, the French chateau-style property has 56,000 square feet of space and is settled on 5 acres of land.

"This house is the equivalent of a mid-sized hotel," Spelling tells PEOPLE. "It's a lot of work."

The manse requires an army of gardeners, security personnel and housekeepers, and boasts a bowling alley, wine cellar, three gift-wrapping rooms, library, gym, screening room and humidity-controlled silver storage room, among many others. Also on-site? A tennis court, fountains, a water fall, a pool and spa, a reflecting pool and 16 car ports.

"I have wonderful memories here," Spelling sighs. "But I feel like it's a new chapter in my life – and it's just me in this big house!"

On the Idoldome stage Wednesday night, we saw the first signs of weariness began to show on the ten remaining gladiators of song vying to become the next American Idol. Until now, their giddiness from the heady experience of being on this fabled stage has sustained them even through the nerve-wracking highs and lows – and so far this season most of them have seen far of the former than the latter.

But on Motown night the strain was a living presence on the stage; no longer could the contestants afford to laugh off bad notices from the judges; the grueling schedule and unimaginable pressure of a million choices made under the pitiless eyes of tens of millions are beginning to take to their toll.

And much worse lies ahead. Each will find their limits and many will reach the place where they only pray for a quick and painless end to their trials.

It is the moment when the pack begins to separate; when the true contenders for the crown break out and others begin the painful meltdown process that sees their once bright hopes evaporate.

At this point in the season, every singer who has not delivered a signature show-stopping moment is playing Russian Roulette each week, hoping for a lucky break to save them. Every time a singer turns in one of those moments, he or she builds up a resevoir of good will that can last them one to three weeks, until they fall back in the crosshairs again. In the seasons first few weeks, we’ve only had a handful of those moments and thus only a very small number can be considered truly untouchable. The field remains remarkably fluid.

THE BOTTOM TIER:

Michael Sarver
Momentum: Negative
Riding a down arrow to the bottom of the pack, has been lackluster at best throughout the season and unless a miracle happens, is living on borrowed time. Had the looks of one who has lost the will to fight as the judges used him for a punching bag. Unforgivably said he was “okay with that” when Simon said he couldn’t win; not winning is not a thought any true contender should ever be okay with. The down home vote may see him through for a bit longer however.

Scott MacIntyre
Momentum: Even.
Despite his appealing innocent charm and compelling story, the early hopes for greatness are disappearing fast.

Megan Joy
Momentum: Negative
Likely fell from the middle tier to the bottom tier with her panned performance tonight. Her quirky antics and surprisingly strong performance last week still give her a stong following, however, with some believing she is the most unique and original Idol contestant in years. Also helping- the fact that she is one of only three women left.

THE MIDDLE TIER:

Anoop Desai
Momentum: Positive
Has had a brilliant growth curve, coming to the finals with the lowest of expectations, starting on a disastrous foot and delivering back to back solid performances. Scores very high on the likability index but his normal-guyness makes him very unlikely to grow past the middle ranks.

Kris Allen
Momentum: Positive
Also showing a very strong growth curve, sneaking in almost under the radar; could be this year’s Jason Castro with his appeal to teen and younger girls.

Lil Rounds
Momentum: Negative
Riding a growth chart almost the exact opposite of Anoop’s. Entered the finals with massively high expectations so that only complete show stopping performances will meet deliver. Thus far, has failed to have that needed- expected – breakthrough night.

Matt Giraud
Momentum: Positive
With easy charm, appeal to the critical cougar demographic and to the singer/songwriter Brooke White voting block, is looking more and more like a real contender.

Danny Gokey
Momentum: Even to negative
Another victim of early expectations and the one note-ness of his upbeat crowd pleasers is beginning to wear. But strong support from the church-going demo guarantees he’s in the race to stay for a while.

Allison Iraheta (pictured above)
Momentum: Positive
Gaining many followers with her impish charm and powerhouse alternative appeal. On the verge of breaking into the top tier. However, previous stint in the bottom three warns that she still has work to do to win over a dedicated following. Also – the edgy rocker girl demo has had a very rough history on the Idol stage. Will her edginess scare off her natural teen girl support.

TOP TIER

Adam Lambert
Momentum: Positive
Riding a string of memorable performances and at least one major breakthrough. Question marks remain; is he too flamboyant to go the distance?

And let us pause one last time – how this chart still seems somehow empty without Alexis Grace.

Trim, outgoing and adorned with wavy golden locks, Virginia Madsen doesn't seem to have changed much physically over the 25 years she has spent before the cameras. The obvious difference is in the perspective that comes with having seen plenty of hilltops and valleys. But as she has shown in recent films -- as an earthy waitress in "Sideways," a vixen in "The Number 23" and, now, a mother facing a supernatural onslaught in "The Haunting in Connecticut," which opens Friday -- and as becomes equally clear in conversation, she has pieces of all those roles inside her. ¶ "I always say the younger girls have the abundance of work, but I get to play real women, not girls, who have a whole life behind them," she says, sitting cross-legged on a backless chair in a cleverly decorated Hollywood lounge, revealing an ornate crucifix tattoo with astrological and Native American elements (acknowledging that part of her background) symbolizing "faith" on her left ankle. ¶ The 47-year-old was happy to mesh those adult complexities with the genre she wanted to get back into with "The Haunting in Connecticut," in which her character struggles to hold her family together as strange occurrences complicate her son's cancer treatment.

"I love horror movies," she says.

"I like movies about vampires -- that's why I liked 'Candyman' so much; it was like 'Dracula.' Did you ever see Frank Langella play Dracula?" She purrs: "My God, can you imagine what that did to a teenage girl?"

Since "Candyman," the 1992 Clive Barker story of an urban legend come true, Madsen says, she has been searching for another equally solid horror script. "The characters need to have weight to them, so when you are watching 'The Exorcist,' you care so much about that mother and child. You could feel what this was doing to that mother."

Much depends on the script, agrees "Haunting" director Peter Cornwell, but the actors must make it work. "So many horror films, the performances aren't at that level. You think, 'It would be great to have a mum like that' when you watch [Madsen's character]. She's a fighter. At the same time, you can see underneath she's breaking up under the stress -- Virginia really hit the right note." And off the set, Cornwell says, "She organized get-togethers. We went bowling one night. She rented a barge for us to go down the river in Winnipeg. There was real camaraderie. Making a film is always stressful, but it was the lowest stress it could be."

The actress, who has a teenage son, acknowledges she wanted to replicate her character's status as rock of the family off-camera: "I love being the den mother. I became very, very close with Kyle and Amanda; they're still my friends," Madsen says of costars Kyle Gallner and Amanda Crew, who play her son and niece.

"Her number's in my phone as 'V-Mama,' " says Crew, who admitted to initial nervousness at working with Madsen, an Oscar nominee. "She was so warm. I never felt weird about asking her for advice. She's just one of the most amazing people I've ever worked with, and really a mentor to me."

Madsen didn't come by this status easily. Her first big splash was as an ingénue in the very '80s tech fantasy "Electric Dreams," which the extremely wired actress-producer is now working to remake with updated technology and a deeper exploration of its cybersoul theme. However, after such sexpot turns as in "The Hot Spot," she found herself struggling to drive her train down a different career track.

"That image of a woman is indelible. A sexually powerful, evil being who's in control; it's very lasting and it will always be with me," she says with the cool of someone who has had a long time to think it out.

"The nudity I did was right for my roles, but I was always questioned about it. I always used to sort of apologetically say, 'Oh, no, that wasn't me, that was a body double.' Because I'm modest, as a person. But now I say," she puffs up grandly, " 'Thank you. Yes, that was my ass.' It becomes different when you're in your 40s. There's a built-in respect. And I'm confident now; I wasn't very confident in my 20s. As I grew up, I just think I got better. I sort of came into my own. It's the same for a lot of women I know. And you don't have to make apologies for anything.

"Times have changed a lot. But if you're a young ingénue, the rules are still in place: You don't take off your top, you don't be sexually free in a movie, because you're put in a certain category, and many times you're shamed. I was like, 'Why am I now that? Why am I over in that other category and I'm not now Julia Roberts?' "

Whatever the answer, the '90s were characterized for her by the likes of "Caroline at Midnight," "Becoming Colette" and "Blue Tiger." Which is not to say they were all bad ("Colette," sort of a poor man's "Henry & June," is not awful), but their lack of noteworthiness is worthy of note. It wasn't until 2004's "Sideways" that Madsen got off the local and back onto the express -- this time with a host of accolades, including that Oscar nomination, as her ticket. "It meant something on a very deep level when I was given an award from the Los Angeles Film Critics, and [L.A. Times critic] Kenneth Turan gave it to me. When I got up there and they applauded me and stood . . . ." She chokes up slightly, turns to wipe her eyes, laughing: "I just did a Barbara Walters!

"It still is very moving to me because it was an acknowledgment of all the years that I spent in this business. And most of the time they were right about a movie that was not so good. So to get their congratulations, for them to say, 'You are the best, in our view,' it was hard for me to even speak."

In terms of theatrical value, the business of raising children is limited. It lends itself to revealing anecdotes -- The Day I Glue-Gunned My Son's Face -- amusing little riffs, and the occasional soliloquy of love and rage.

Take it to long form and you can quickly run into trouble. Parenting often boils down to a series of repetitive tasks and maddening dialogue, much of which has to do with such fascinating topics as bedtime, personal hygiene, sibling-on-sibling violence and the nutritional value of Cheetos.

Which is why television comedy writers so often either genetically manipulate the family -- the parents are liberals, the son's a Republican! (“Family Ties”) -- or mix and match it -- look, three guys raising kids (“Full House”), two divorced women living together (“Kate and Allie”), a single mom and a male housekeeper (“Who’s the Boss?”) -- just to keep things interesting.

It also may be why "In the Motherhood" worked as a Web series based on real-life stories but not, it would seem, as a television series based on overused stereotypes.

"In the Motherhood," which premieres on ABC tonight, follows all the traditional formulas. Literally. All of them. You've got your neurotic single working mom, Jane (Cheryl Hines), and her "manny," Horatio (Horatio Sanz), and your obsessive-compulsive stay-at-home sister, Emily (Jessica St. Clair), and her with-the-program husband, Jason (RonReaco Lee). You've even got your wise-crackin', benignly neglectful single mom, Rosemary (Megan Mullally).

In fact, "In the Motherhood" has enough narrative fodder to fuel three separate family comedies, which maybe it should consider. Because what it doesn't have is any sign of working as it is.

OK, Mullally is consistently hilarious through the two episodes made available for review, and she manages to hitch Sanz to her wagon. So if the good folks at ABC somehow persuade the writing team to make the show about Rosemary and Horatio, maybe it would stand a chance.

But Jane is the central focus, and as much as everyone loved Hines in "Curb Your Enthusiasm," her character here is written in such a way that it is hard to believe she is a mother, a worker or a woman. (I don't want to spoil anything, but would any adult woman take the "third date rule" seriously enough to attempt intercourse in the middle of her just-emptied office because her baby-sitter meter is running out?)

And don't even get me started on Emily, yet another version of those handy picture-perfect mothers who conveniently make outrageously judgmental statements on the playground so writer-moms can vent their frustration in articles for the Atlantic Monthly or wherever. The Mean Girl Mom. What would we do without her?

As with most shows about family these days, the kids are either mysteriously absent (Jane's preteen daughter, Rosemary's teenage son) or mysteriously silent (Emily's young son and daughter, who like folding laundry).

So "In the Motherhood" isn't really about motherhood; it's about types of motherhood, as imagined by television executives or magazine editors. Ten years ago.

Now, full disclosure. I'm a mother, so if you're going to ask me to laugh at other mothers, you have to give me a good reason and people I recognize.

Actual living, loving, overworked and underappreciated crazy-imperfect mothers. I actually know a bunch of them, but none, apparently, live "In the Motherhood."
